Commerce bars foreign users from Anthropic's newest models, then lifts the order

A letter from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick put Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 under export controls for all foreign nationals. Anthropic shut both off for everyone. Controls ended June 30.

Anthropic received the directive at 5:21 p.m. Eastern on June 12. Because it could not check users’ nationality in real time, it disabled both models for all customers. Reports tied the order to a claimed jailbreak of the models’ safeguards; Anthropic disputed that this justified pulling them.

Commerce first allowed Mythos 5 back for a set of U.S. organizations that run critical infrastructure, then withdrew the controls on June 30. Access resumed on July 1.
