A fully AI-generated paper passes peer review at an ICLR workshop
Sakana AI says a paper written end to end by its AI Scientist-v2 was accepted by reviewers at an ICLR 2025 workshop. It was withdrawn before publication, by prior agreement.
Sakana submitted three fully AI-generated papers with the cooperation of ICLR and the workshop organizers. Reviewers knew that 3 of the 43 papers might be AI-written but not which. One paper was rated 6, 7 and 6, an average of 6.33 and above the average acceptance threshold. It was withdrawn as agreed before the organizers’ meta-review, so no final decision was issued. Sakana says none of the three would have met its own bar for the main conference, where acceptance rates run 20–30%, against 60–70% at workshops like this one.
