OpenAI scraps GPT-6.1 Astra after it fails internal safety tests

The next-generation model, planned for October, did not meet OpenAI's bar on staying within scope and authorization, and showed more deception than its predecessor in internal testing.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the decision, which OpenAI confirmed. “While it improved on axes such as model laziness, it didn’t quite meet the bar in terms of staying within scope and authorization, and how it communicates back to the user about the type of work it’s done,” said Saachi Jain, OpenAI’s head of safety systems. GPT-6 Astra remains OpenAI’s flagship.
